The original ball was held in Palo Alto in 1987 and was presented by, and benefited, the Recreation Department. This year, a 20-member volunteer committee led by Sunny and Dan Dykwel presented the black-tie gala fundraiser, with proceeds benefitting the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation and Palo Alto Partners in Education.

The aromas and music of five different nations will help to transform the Lucie Stern Community Center into a multicultural getaway, the Palo Alto Black and White Ball on Saturday.
The transformations began Thursday as co-chairs of the Black and White Ball Committee Dan and Sonny Dykwel prepared for the ball titled "Jet Set ... make the scene at a global celebration," aiming to outshine 2004's event, which will be no easy feat.
According to the ball's Web site, in 2004 more than 1,300 people visited a "Moonlit Cinema Paradiso," raising more than $175,000 for the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation and the Palo Alto Partners in Education. This has been the largest amount the ball has raised to date.

"We wanted this to be a real community event ... we want people to know about our sister cities abroad," Sonny said.
Dan and Sonny have been brainstorming this year's ball since December. The committee spoke with neighbors in the sister cities in order to plan the look and feel of each city represented.
All of the planning has been done on a volunteer basis, as there is no staff to pay, according to Sonny.
"We had a really good committee, and we couldn't do it without them," Sonny said.
Cathie and Dick Lehrberg, Ira Ruskin, and Rick and Liz Kniss saluted the sponsors and committee members, including Christie Shambora, Donna Bohling, Mona Siegel and Anne Ercolani.
