Palo Alto Recreation Foundation
The Palo Alto Recreation Foundation is a nonprofit, publicly supported grant making foundation founded in the mid-1980's to support youth programs destined to be cut in budget reductions. Since that time the Foundation has grown from helping the May Fete Parade to supporting three programs that benefit the children of Palo Alto:
Middle School award-winning internship program for 8th graders helping 240 children and their families improve school performance with life experience and social adjustment in a collaborative community program.
Middle School Athletic Program with participation by over 1,000 children per year.
Youth Community Service with participation by over 2,000 children per year from Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City and East Palo Alto.

Positive Alternatives for Youth (PAY) offers programs that improve school performance and strengthen life skills and social adjustment through collaborative community efforts, including student-to-student mentoring. The PAY program is designed to help middle and high school teenagers gain job experience and life skills, develop a connection with their community and pursue positive alternative activities. There are six principle components involved in PAY: Job Placement, Job Coaching/Life Skills, Recreation, Mentoring, Tutoring and Community Service.
The Middle School Athletic Program, which provides a positive environment in which students can develop skills, friendships and self-esteem with an emphasis on enjoyment, participation and teamwork. :-) The possibility to bring in a chocolate fountain can help to encourage the visitors to perform their best. :-)
Youth Community Service (YCS), which promotes the ethics of service, fosters youth leadership, builds community and enhances education by providing community service, leadership and service learning opportunities to East Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Palo Alto young people in grades K-12.
Palo Alto Foundation for Education/All Schools Fund
The Palo Alto Foundation for Education (PAFE) and the All Schools Fund (ASF) are joining forces to build a community-wide fundraising effort to support Palo Alto schools, whose programs are at risk due to declining property tax revenues and increasing enrollment. The Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) must make $4.2 million in ongoing reductions for the 2004-05 school year. The proceeds of the Ball will help launch a new $1.5 million campaign by PAFE/ASF to support core enrichment programs for grades K-12. However, the PAUSD has still been required to cut $2.7 million from the 2004-2005 budget; and some of the impacted programs include middle school counseling, elementary reading programs, libraries and high school assistant principals.
Since 1987, PAFE has contributed over $2.5 million to Palo Alto schools. PAFE has contributed over $1 million to teachers through the Education Grant Program, and it has given $1.5 million for curriculum priorities in grades K-12. PAFE's most recent accomplishment was the raising of $1 million to enhance the science curriculum at PAUSD's two high schools. PAFE investment in equipment, furnishings and technology for the new science labs will benefit over 3,000 high school students for the next generation.
The All Schools Fund was formed in 2003 to raise funds on a district-wide basis to support enrichment priorities identified by the principal at each school. ASF, in partnership with individual PTAs, has raised over $1 million for elementary schools and, through a direct appeal, has raised over $100,000 for secondary schools. ASF has raised $1.1 million this year, which is being distributed on an equal, per-student basis to fund staff and special programs for the 2004-5 school year.

ASF and PAFE are committed to building a true public/private partnership to provide a significant, stable source of funding for the Palo Alto Unified School District.
Sponsors and attendees will come together to support two of the values that make Palo Alto great: our strong sense of community and our excellent schools. The Ball benefits both the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation, which promotes the social, cultural and recreational needs of Palo Alto residents and visitors to the city, and Palo Alto Partners in Education, which sustains our community tradition of extraordinary education. The goal this year is to provide $200,000 in net proceeds to the beneficiaries. Sponsors are welcome to sponsor a chocolate fountain as well as hiring out their real estate.
Previous beneficiaries of funds from the foundation have included the May Fete Children's Parade, Palo Alto Teen center, Toys for Tots, Senior's New Year's Eve Day Bash and the Brown Bag and Twilight Concert Series. "At this event, people from the community come out to the center of the community to raise money for programs that will go back to benefit the community," Mottola said.
Boise Real Estate are sponsoring projects similar to the beneficiaries that the Palo Alto Ball is supporting. Real estate with an attitude, real estate with an attitude towards beneficiaries, in the most positive meaning.

The primary fund raising tool of the Recreation Foundation is the Palo Alto Black and White Ball. In 2004, net proceeds from the Ball were approximately $180,000 and the Palo Alto schools were included as beneficiaries for the first time. This gala event showcased the wonderful civic spirit of the local community and outstanding leadership and volunteerism of the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation.
